Weddington pledges continued support
At a White House meeting on October 27, arranged by the National Gay Task Force, presidential assistant Sarah Weddington pledged to continue to work on gay issues begur by Midge Costanza, former Assistant to the President for Public Liaison.
Ms. Weddington told NGTF Co-Executive Directors Jean O'Leary and Bruce Voeller, and Eleanor Smeal and Arlie Scott, president and vice-president of the National Organization for Women, that she would continue to arrange meetings between gay leaders and executives of Federal agencies. She also stated that even though she is charged with giving top priority to the ERA and other economic issues of interest to women, she has no intention of downgrading the issue of discrimination against lesbians and gay
men.
In addition to requesting and receiving these assurances, the NGTF and NOW spokespeople pressed Ms. Weddington for a statement from President Carter in opposition to California's Proposition 6, which would deny free speech rights to gay teachers and their supporters. She promised to discuss the matter with senior members
of the White House staff.
Smeal and Scott stressed the importance of gay-rights issues to the women's movement, and stated that they would personally urge the President to speak out on Proposition 6.
Thanks for a large response to last month's ad. Unfortunately, there was only one opening, but many qualified people to choose from.
I will keep applications on file for future use.

Rape law out
WASHINGTON, D.C.-The U.S Supreme Court has ruled a New Hampshire law against statutory rape unconstitutional because it punishes males, but not females, who engage in sexual acts with minors.
The Court let stand a decision by the First Circuit Court of Appeals that overturned the conviction of a 24-year-old Portsmouth, New Hampshire, man who was found guilty of having sex with a 14-year-old girl in 1974. The man had served three and half years in prison.
U.B. passes
gay clause
An amendment to the University of Buffalo's nondiscrimination code was unanimously passed by the College Council on a motion from Michael Pierce the only Istudent representative. Pierce, an openly gay student, had made
the motion backed by a petition signed by seventy students
asking that a statement be added to the non-discrimination code to outlaw bias on the grounds of sexual orientation or affectual preference.
The Council, a body of community and business leaders selected by the governor along with one. elected non-voting student member is the governing body of the University. By passing the amendment to the non-discrimination code which is in accord with the 1968 Civil Rights Act the College Council footnoted and defined sex. Sex, now according to the footnote is defined not only by gender, but also by one's sexual preference. In practical terms this means that the amendment is not just an empty phrase, but an effective one for the protection of gays. --courtesy of 5th Freedom, 11/78
